According to Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad there are 21 Universities / Degree Awarding Institutes (DAI) are functioning in the Punjab Province whereas out of these 21 Universities/ Degree Awarding Institutes, Lahore is fortunate to captivate loin share of 16 Universities / Institutes. The breakup of the remaining Universities / Degree Awarding Institute is one each at Taxila, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Wah and Multan.

It is worth mentioning that the vast region of Southern Punjab comprising 3 civil administrative divisions have solitary Degree Awarding Institute in the name and style “ Institute of Southern Punjab Multan” popularly known as ISP having enormous gap / vacuum ranging from Sukkar to Faisalabad stretching to Lahore. The Institute of Southern Punjab Multan developed infrastructure in all respects at University status and the management endeavouring its best to upgrade the only Degree Awarding Institute to Southern University of Multan.
