M.Sc. Civil Engineering

Introduction

The program of MSc. Civil Engineering is focused on giving an in-depth understanding of advanced knowledge of civil engineering together with better insight into modern tools and technologies used in the field for enabling the graduates to handle the complex engineering problem and deal with emerging challenges of civil engineering sustainably and in an optimal manner to play their role in technological advancement and socio-economic development. In MSc. Civil Engineering, currently, the specialization is offered by the Best University in Multan in Hydraulics & Irrigation Engineering and Structural Engineering. Where, Hydraulics & Irrigation is one of the major fields of civil engineering that deals with the application of principles of hydraulics on the problems dealing with the regulation, control, and utilization of lakes, reservoirs, and rivers for human benefit. The use of hydraulic engineering was prevalent even in ancient times for the purpose of constructing dams, canals, and aqueducts to supply water for irrigation. In today’s world, where the human population is growing exponentially together with a demand for high quality living on one side and the issues of the impact of climate change on the availability of water on the other side, this precious renewable natural resource, water, is under a lot of stress and hence the role of hydraulics and irrigation engineering has become pivotal to cope up with the challenge of supplying water for variable demands for different stakeholders in an efficient and reliable manner. The emphasis of specialization in Hydraulics & Irrigation engineering is on the understanding of river engineering, hydrological cycle, the process of sediment transport, and the flow characteristics for optimal solutions of different problems of open channel and pipe flow for planning, designing, and operation of hydraulic structures to be used for water storages, generation of hydropower, regulation, and conveyance of water and its application for irrigation and domestic water supply. As for as the specialization of structural engineering is concerned, it is a major sub-discipline of civil engineering that exists since humans first started to construct their own place for living and building structures. In the modern world, it has become a more defined and formalized profession. The role of a structural engineer today involves a significant understanding of the analysis and design of modern structural systems so that the requirements of serviceability, aesthetics, and economy could be met. The complexity of modern structures often requires a great deal of creativity from the engineers in order to ensure that the structures support and resist the loads against which they are designed. The emphasis of this specialization is laid on the modern methods of structural analysis and design of structural systems, primarily of conventional and pre-stressed concrete.

Career Prospects

There is a huge national and international job market for graduates of civil engineering. In Pakistan, many public and private sector organization regularly seeks the services of civil engineers especially with specialization in different fields of civil engineering. There are several government departments at the federal and provincial level, especially dealing with the planning, development, operation, and maintenance of infrastructure, that employ a lot of civil engineering graduates each year. The list of these departments includes but is not limited to Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Provincial Irrigation Departments, Pakistan Railways, NHA, PWD, Public Health Engineering Department, and Communication & Works Department. Besides government jobs, a lot of positions are available in several autonomous and private sector organizations. There are many educational institutes, contractor firms, and consultancies working in Pakistan. The educational institutes concerning civil engineering education require the services of highly qualified civil engineers in their teaching faculty. Whereas, the organization dealing with the mega civil engineering projects either in the capacity of contractor or consultant may prefer the civil engineering graduates with higher degrees in their induction as well as in the promotion in certain cases. Along with national firms, there are many international firms working on several engineering projects in Pakistan. These international firms also induct the competent high qualified local engineer into their workforce. Besides, the graduates can also work independently as a freelancer or could initiate his own start-up relevant to his field.
